EMS is in a unique position to be part of a team of healthcare providers that is necessary to respond to the opioid crisis. The Naloxone Leave Behind Kit Program is intended to expand access to naloxone to save the lives of persons suffering from opioid use disorder, which is recognized as a chronic medical condition.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the Bureau of EMS, Trauma and Preparedness have teamed up to capitalize on the opportunity to provide this life-saving treatment and education to patients who have experienced an overdose with the ultimate goal of reducing overdoses and overdose deaths in Michigan.

EMS is in a unique position to be part of a team of healthcare providers necessary to respond to the opioid crisis. A key component of EMS response to overdose calls is documentation. This presentation will discuss some of the challenges noted with EMS documentation and how to improve and standardize documentation.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the Division of EMS, and Systems of Care work collaboratively on overdose surveillance to monitor data trends and create alerts for communities across the state. Using near real time submissions can better inform EMS providers, MCA’s, emergency departments, and local health departments of abnormal spikes in overdose data trends.
